PAT Central Mural

On Friday, September 13, 2019, a mural unveiling ceremony was held at PAT Central(한국식품) in Bloor Koreatown, sponsored by the Korea Tourism Organization(KTO) Toronto and the Consulate General of Korea in Toronto. The mural consists of major buildings and historical sites that symbolize South Korea or its unique culture, including Injeongjeon in Changdeokgung Palace, Royal guards’s changing ceremony, King Sejong the Great, Seodang(Private School) painted by Kim Hongdo, Cheonggyecheon Stream & Spring sculpture, Shinbu(Bride) & Seonbi(gentleman), Haechi, Lotte World Tower, Seoul N Tower, Talchum(Mask Dance), Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, Taekwondo, Namdaemun Gate, Jangdock(soy sauce crocks), Cheomseondae Observatory, Dolharubang.

This palace was built in 1405 and used as the main palace by many Joseon kings for about 300 years. It was designated as UNESCO world heritage site.(Royal audience chamber)

Folking paintings were realistic depictions of the lives of commoners, sometimes with a touch of humor. The themes included nature, and among animal themes, tigers and crows were favorites.

King Sejong commissioned a team of scholars to create an alphabet so that the masses could also read and write. In fact, there is no other nation in the world that can pinpoint exactly when, where, why and by whom their writing system was developed or invented

This stream flows from Gwanghwamun Gate in the center of Seoul, all the way to the Seoul Yangnyeong Market, where it meets with the Hangang River. It is a popular rest area for busy Seoulites and tired tourists, and the annual Seoul Lantern Festival illuminates the stream every November.

Weddings were held in the bride’s yard and this was the only day commoners were allowed to wear formal court costumes.

With a commanding view of Seoul, N Seoul Tower is equipped with observatories and a revolving restaurant for a full 360 view. There is also a personal media play zone where you can check out the latest movie trailers and music videos, pavillion exhibition halls where various cultural events are held, and a rooftop terrace where you can enjoy a scenic view of Seoul.

Since the mask dance was an expression of the trials and tribulations of commoners, they portrayed their hostile feelings toward the yangban(aristocrat) by distorting the facial features. Depending on the region, the masks and stories vary somewhat, but they all had the same fundamental elements, ranging from exorcism rites and ritual dances to parodies of human weaknesses and the social and privileged class.

This UNESCO World-Heritage was constructed byJeongjo(1752-1800) fo the Joseon Dynasty, as he relocated his hather’s tomb to Suwon. It was regarded as a representative fortress not only for its scientific structure and military functions, but also for its architectural buauty. It has a total length of 6km and has been preserved almost in its original form. Haenggung is the temporaty palace within the fortress that served as the temporaty residence during the king’s royal march. The palace was featured in various Korean period dramas such as Jewel in the Palace.

Taekwondo is a traditional martial art and method of self-defense. The ultimate goal of taekwondo is to develop character and personality of the practitioner through physical , mental and spiritual discipline. Taekwondo became a worldwide sport after it was designated as an offical Olmphic sport in 2000.

Built in 1398, designated as National Treasure No.1. which was the south gate of the old capital of seoul in Joseon Dynasty, standing at one of the Seoul’s busiest intersections near the City hall.

Cheomseondae Observatory is Asia’s earliest known observatory still in existance. It is a 7th-century bottle-shaped stone structure admired by archeologists worldwide. The square window facing south in the middle of the structure is believed to have served as an entrance reached by a ladder.

Dolharubang, which translates to ‘stone grandfather’ is a black lava statue of an old man, and they can easily be seen throughout the island. In the past, dolharubang was placed by village entrances and acted as guardian deities.
